ways to support ELB

A while ago, I set up a Patreon for ELB to try and gain some additional support to help me keep the site going. It was overcomplicated and did not get much interest (though I’m lucky to have had a couple of subscribers who stuck with me!).

I’ve decided to relaunch the Patreon with a much simpler proposition: if you like what I’m doing with this website, please consider contributing, so I can do more with it. Here’s the full, revised introduction to the Patreon below, with a bit of background to the site and my reasoning for how I’m running it.

English Lessons Brighton provides educational material for English learners and teachers. This content is primarily available free. With your contribution, I can consistently produce more new and better content for students everywhere.

By becoming a Patreon, you’ll receive notifications for all my newsletters, including new articles notifications and curated archive articles. As a bonus, all the newsletters will be stored here to search or browse through at any time.

About ELB

I created the original ELB site back in 2013. As I was tutoring advanced students with tricky questions, I had to answer things I couldn’t find covered elsewhere. After I wrote explanations and exercises for my students, I thought it would useful to share them with everyone else.

My students weren’t the only ones asking such questions: the site was soon being visited by thousands of people a day.

I determined early on to keep ELB without subscription barriers, advertising or sponsored content, as I believe education should be available to all, no matter who you are, where you live or whatever your means.

With this in mind, I consistently produce at least one new article a month and share two newsletters a month. I also spend a lot of time answering reader questions in the blog. As long as readers keep visiting ELB, I would like to keep doing this. It is a labour of love, however, and the site itself does not bring in a direct income.

Fortunately, the enthusiasm of my readers led me to produce books, starting with The English Tenses Practical Grammar Guide. I followed this with Word Order in English Sentences. Both of these became long-term Kindle Bestsellers, along with my third book, Advanced Writing Skills for Students of English, which has been used as a core university text.

The book sales were thanks to advertising efforts that took me years to master, quite separate to the ELB site. Unfortunately, that advertising has become more competitive and difficult to do, so the books no longer fully support me, which in turn makes it harder to focus on the website.

I am aware that the site is not perfect, and there is always something more for me to work on, but with more support, I would like to expand my efforts here, and continue producing ELB content to the best of my abilities.

What Do You Get As A Patron

I no longer intend to offer tiered rewards for Patrons. I want the content of the website to be available to everyone, regardless of means. Therefore, I am only asking that people offer what they feel the continued work of the site is worth – to themselves or to others.

As mentioned above, you will receive extra notifications on new content and access to all the archived newsletters available here. I may throw in some occasional exclusive thoughts and polls, with Patreon providing an extra platform for communication.

However, with increased support and therefore more time to focus on the site, I would offer the following to everyone:

  • Produce more new articles each month
  • Increase the number of newsletters sent out
  • Better organise the website so subjects and exercises can be easily navigated
  • Add audio/visual content to the site

In addition, this would help me to produce more books and audiobooks.

If you enjoy what I am doing with ELB and would like to help me make more of it, please consider supporting today!
