I read the print version of this book. The book would be ideal for a non-native speaker writing in English for school or work. I regularly come across material written by someone for their work. In such cases, I often find what they have written to be cumbersome to read because they are unfamiliar with customary word order in English. That is a considerable disadvantage in our competitive world. This book would be a great help. [Full review on Amazon]

Thank you Phil for writing this book.

This book gives me hope and confidence that I can get better at customizing sentences!

It’s presented so well with clarity and color. Plus, each chapter progresses naturally from simple word combinations to detail phrases.

Some grammar books out there are hard to follow for the following reasons: the material is organized like an encyclopedia, the font and paper type make it difficult to read, and there seems to be no consideration for developing the student’s comprehension over the course of the book.

Finding “Word Order In English Sentences” online for grammar students is like owning an iPhone for the first time. It’s gives you that “Yes! This is what I’ve been looking for! This is amazing!” feeling.

It’s a wonderful step-by-step “how-to” for learning how to combine words and assemble great sentences.

I just started this book, and I’m already confused. There is a sentence on page 6 that reads, “We moved house.” Can someone explain this to me because, to me, it makes absolutely no sense. Is it because I’m used to American English? [Author note: Yes, this is a British English usage of the verb.]

You have to be a GEEK to buy this book, but it is a perfect source for building sentences for practicing vocabulary for new residents of our country.

This is a great little book that I use with my advanced ESL class. It has nice accessible exercises and helps simplify a topic that is really pretty complex. Would highly recommend!

  6. Barbara C. (verified owner)

I wanted a book that would organize the types of sentences and addition of words and phrases from simplest to more complex in an organized way. This is not that book. Although there are some good examples and rules of grammar, they are laid out in an odd way. I would not recommend.

  7. Al Galt (verified owner)

Very useful, step by step each practice with explained solutions

  8. Amazon Customer (verified owner)

    Excellent!

  9. Amazon Customer (verified owner)

I found several grammatical errors in the writing so it clearly wasn’t even properly proof read. Plus I tried to use some of the sentence scrambles with my students but many were poorly written.

  10. M. Ryan (verified owner)

Essential book for those who want to write logically

  11. S. J. Scott (verified owner)

Decently helpful book. Can help for some people.

  12. Simeon Mladenov (verified owner)

    nice one

  13. WILLIAM (verified owner)

    Very instructive.

  14. Carla Chaney (verified owner)

The book wasn’t what I expected. It is a book that must be used with a grammar tool because it dives right into the parts of speech without laying the full foundation or a brief review of them. I didn’t find it to be as functional as I had anticipated.

  15. Erica Wea (verified owner)

  16. Ahmed (verified owner)

Very helpful. A must have for all english learners.

  21. Carlos (verified owner)

    Excellent

  22. KFM (verified owner)

This is most uninspiring and incomplete. The exercises are extremely boring and simplistic. I’m tutoring persons from various language backgrounds (after a long career as a college ESL professor). I had expected something that would really address my student ‘s needs. This does not work for me.

  23. Amazon Customer (verified owner)

I’m studying English very hard. My english ability will show after finishing this book. Still it is very helpful to enhance my english capacity.

  24. Lyubitsa (verified owner)

I just have got my purchase. It looks like an useful book.

  25. Andy Allred (verified owner)

I tutor a lot of people in ESL. I’m already building lessons based on the book and I will recommend it to students that are advanced beginners or Intermediate level in English.

Each chapter is not too long, not too short – about 10-20 pages. Chapters range from Sentence structure to Negative Questions, Adverbs, Prepositions and more. Each chapter ends with exercises to test the reader’s knowledge and provides answers on the next page.

The quality of the writing is pretty good, but one of the things i like the most in the writing style is the author’s use of many, many examples that help drive the lesson home.

  26. Benjamin P. Thompson (verified owner)

I think that this book would be an excellent resource for strong intermediate to advanced students and growing ESL/EFL teachers who need to find a quick explanation for a certain aspect of English grammar. I could even see native English speaking middle and high school students that don’t have the strongest grasp on English grammar using this book to help improve their writing. [Full Review on Amazon]

This book gives answers to absolutely any questions you might ever find yourself asking about the word order in English sentences. Phrasal verbs, prepositions, clauses, all parts of speech and all possible ways of organizing them in any types of sentences — all these issues are addressed by the author, who also provides the reader with exercises to practice the rules given in each chapter. But the greatest thing about this guide is that it doesn’t simply tell you what to do, it also explains why, so that you understand the subtle (or not so subtle) change in meaning of the sentence, which can occur if you swap just a couple of words in your phrase. Such understanding is a very rare thing to get after reading even most praised and well-known grammar books and it is what really makes you understand and start using any grammar guidelines successfully.
Overall, an incredibly useful guide you’ll never regret purchasing!

I received a copy of this book free in exchange for an honest review. I have been enjoying the lessons in this book. I have been working on my dissertation and apologize for the delay . The reason I wanted to give the book 4.8 score us because it is in Btitish form. I am starting a Spanish course at my church and will not be teaching the Hispanic/Latinio adults English conversations in British form. However, for my personal use I am able to follow the formats . Thank you.

Once again, the author guides us, second language learner and native speaker alike, through the dense and sometimes obtuse “jungle” that is English, with insight, constant encouragement, and even humor. Again, the focus is on word order, upon which in the absence of the declination, inflection, and conjugation present in other languages, English is absolutely dependent for comprehensibility. I wouldn’t have thought a second edition was necessary after the success of the first, but the author has provided more of everything: more explanation, more examples, and more encouragement. I’m giving this book its rightful place in my language library, right next to my grammar handbooks and linguistics manuals; you should, too.

Phil Williams’ “Word Order” is absolutely a gem for nearly anybody who needs to improve their written and spoken English, and in particular for those who wish to understand the “architecture” of English sentences. Teachers, writers or simply students of English (at any level) will benefit from reading this book, which I wholeheartedly recommend.

  31. AmyMo (verified owner)

The book contains some good examples and is quite well laid out. But, priced at £13.68 with only 92 pages and not printed in colour it is over priced.

  32. Amazon Customer (verified owner)

It is a very useful book.

  33. Avid reader (verified owner)

I wish I had purchased this book years ago, it’s so informative. The exercises and examples make the concepts fall into place.

Good logical explanations revealing the author is a teacher. I expeceted some facts about inversion .

  40. cristina dragu (verified owner)

I use the book for learning English grammar.

  41. Stefan Schenk-Haupt (verified owner)

Honestly, I expected more. There are not many books on the topic – which is absolutely essential for learning the lingo. This book neglects important issues like pronouns and phrase lengths. All exercises are just about rearranging sentences. I was at that point before I got this book. But like I said, there is nothing much to be had at all for SPO (apart from hardcore linguistics), so in dubio pro reo – four stars.

Prescriptive rules do not cover a number of grammatical constructions that have been widely used in standard varieties of English, and most grammar books and usage guides characterised by a decidedly descriptive approach have not addressed a number of grammatical issues either, so that students and teachers of English usually have to analyse and understand some grammatical structures that may not be supported by hard and fast rules. Hence, grammars and usage guides that provide useful information on both firm and ‘loose’ rules are very welcome. Phil Williams provided readers with very useful information on word order and sentence structure, and he did not restrict himself to describing the so-called ‘rules of grammar’. In several sections of the book he discussed the flexibility of some grammatical constructions and patterns, apart from highlighting that some rules might well be regarded as ‘loose rules.’ For instance, he pointed out (section 6.4) that there might be a lot of exceptions to the grammatical rules concerning the position of adjectives, when we use several adjectives in a noun group, so that these rules would not represent ‘firm rules.’ As to genuine rules, he stated that we should put ‘not’ after the auxiliary verb in ‘I did not understand the test’, and he did not mention any flexibility in this pattern because there is no flexibility in this case: we cannot say ‘I not did understand the test’ or ‘I did understand not the test.’ In addition, the tables are very informative and self-explanatory. I believe this guide should not only help learners understand how English works in terms of word order and sentence structure, but it could also encourage learners and teachers to study or teach English in an effective and more realistic manner.

This book teaches you clearly how the main words, pronouns, articles, nouns adjectives verbs, and so on are used in sentences comprehensively so If you want to write or read better in English and you have basic knowledge of English grammar rules this book will help you to achieve it. After reading this book I realize how and why using the right order of words, now I’m much more confident writing and reading in English.

The book is designed as a reference book, something to be pulled out and easily consulted . A rare book about this topic. Finally, the way in which it’s organized, make this book highly useful particularly for a young audience or for adults learning English as a second language.
