This book is invaluable for people who speak English as an additional language. It is a simple and straightforward guide which makes learning English accessible even for people who might feel intimidated by thick language books.
I wholeheartedly recommend all the three books from this author. The books in general cover some basics (which an intermediate or pre-intermediate learner will be familiar with) and escalate learning of English further. These books can also be used as reference for everyday English.

Hello everybody! I bought an electronic version of this book on June 10, 2018 after a thorough search of interesting new products related to the development of English writing skills. I live in Ukraine and only two years I study English. I seriously developed my reading skills and vocabulary. First I could read one page a week))) now I can easily read about 50 pages or more per day, please note that two years ago I knew no more than 100 words in English. In the meantime, my writing skills are close to zero, and I firmly decided to develop them to some level of landed level. I have long been looking for a book with practical advice that does not bear an official tone, it is easy to read and turn over in a good sense the perception and atmosphere of learning. I barely stopped after reading this book to write this sincere response immediately. Many thanks to the author. I apologize for the grammar, I wrote through an interpreter from Russian. I unequivocally recommend this book!

A book about writing could offer a hostage to fortune, but Advanced Writing Skills for Students of English serves as a useful model of how to go about the execution of writing. Phil Williams follows his own advice, offering clear, typically concise, guidelines that should prove useful for new writers and those seeking to improve their technique. He provides frequent examples of how choices made while writing may be used to serve a variety of purposes, and suggestions for ways of varying style for communicative effect. He also gives consideration to the sometimes implicit implications of these choices, which are not always obvious to students.
In the interest of balance, Phil sometimes goes against his advice. Occasionally his choice of word might tax a student’s vocabulary, or undermine the effectiveness of his communication, and he also makes use of over-used words. While the section on phonetics is intended to help with spelling, some of the detail seems tangential to that purpose. In some of the later sections, more detail and examples would have been useful. It is nevertheless a thoroughly useful book which provides an accessible resource for students developing their writing.

I’ve read many books on writing. This is the worst. I can learn almost nothing from this book.

I learned far more than I’d have expected considering that I’m a native English speaker and have a fairly good understanding of grammar and language usage. So, this book is very helpful for anyone hoping to improve their written English – even native speakers.
I like the step-by-step nature, clarity, simplicity and conciseness of the book – which is also what the author teaches. So, he definitely practises what he preaches!
Although I don’t know much about the craft of writing, beyond English A-level and being a native speaker, I found his book very easy to understand and motivating as it shows that improving written English is attainable for anyone who wants to work at it.
One particularly helpful aspect is that he explains that unless something is actually wrong, different ways of writing are a matter of style. He gives examples of how not to write and then shows how to correct mistakes or change/improve the text – which is one of the things I found to be the most helpful.
